چکیده

A liquid diet for rearing Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae) was developed. Several yeast-based products were evaluated as diet ingredients, and a combination of whole cell yeast (LBI2240) and hydrolyzed yeast (such as FNILS65) in 1:1Ð3:1 ratio was selected for use in the study. Larvae reared in a liquid dietwithLBI2240:FNILS65 ratios of either 1:1 or 3:1 resulted in the same pupal recovery as to those reared in the conventional mill feebased control diet. Larvae reared in a liquid diet with whole cell yeast only yielded the lowest pupal production, whereas other parameters such as adult emergence, adult ßiers, pupal weight, egg production, and percentage of egg hatch were not affected. In diets fortiÞed with vitamin-fortiÞed yeast (RDA) or glutamine-rich yeast (GSH), there was no enhanced effect on insects, whereas some detrimental effects were observed in some of the parameters measured. A whole cell yeast to hydrolyzed yeast ratio of 3:1 was found to be the most suitable based on quality control parameters measured and cost-effectiveness. This is recommended for use in liquid diets targeting C. capitatamass rearing because the cost of whole cell yeastwas 5 times cheaper than that of hydrolyzed yeast. This study also demonstrates that it is possible to rearC. capitata in a liquid diet at a similar cost tomill feed diet and still maintain the same ßy quality as that from the conventional control diet.

Larval rearing of Bactrocera invadens Drew, Tsuruta & White (Diptera: Tephritidae) on artiÞcial diet is described. The adaptation process for this insect, when moved from whole mango, Mangifera indica L., fruit rearing to artiÞcial diet based on wheat bran, took between three and Þve generations to reach theplateauof quality control parameters observed for rearing the insect onwhole mango fruit...

PHYSIOLOGY, BIOCHEMISTRY, AND TOXICOLOGY Cryopreservation of Embryos of the New World Screwworm Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae)

A method for cryopreserving embryos of the screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), was developed for the long-term storage of strains used in research projects and for colonies maintained as back-up to production strains that are mass-reared for sterile insect release programs. This protocol, when combined with a previous procedure that was designed to render screwworm embryos permeable ...

Investigation on Biochemically Processed Castor Seed Meal in Nutrition and Physiology of Japanese Quails

Native de-oiled and treated castor seed meal was subjected to proximate analysis and quantification of anti-nutrients (phytochemicals). Seed cake was treated by biochemical technique of solid state fermentation with Aspergillus niger and addition of calcium oxide (CaO) to give treated castor seed meal (TCSM). One hundred and twenty Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) were fed four (4) ...

The effects of diet composition and ration on biotransformation enzymes and stress parameters in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss.

Juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were fed one of three isoenergetic diets varying in protein (35-55%) and lipid content (8-18%), at full satiation levels or half rations for 6 weeks in order to investigate the effects of diet on baseline stress parameters and biotransformation enzyme activity. Growth was greatest in fish fed to satiation on a low protein and high lipid diet. Stress ...
